Discover 1st Mate, the first integrated marine safety system that combines wireless technology, wearable devices, and a mobile app to ensure maximum safety at sea.


What is 1st Mate?

1st Mate is a kit that includes a smart hub, wearable fobs, and a mobile app that provides alerts and safety functions through:

• Man Overboard Detection:

If the captain or a passenger falls overboard, the system shuts down the engine(s), sounds an alarm, and sends GPS notifications to other crew members via the 1st Mate app.

• Emergency Messages:

In the event of an accident, 1st Mate can automatically send a distress message to pre-set emergency contacts, including position, heading, and time.

• Theft Deterrent System (TDS):

Locks the engine(s) to prevent unauthorized use. Unlocking is only possible via the captain’s wearable fob or the mobile app.

The 1st Mate safety system uses wearable fobs for the captain and up to seven passengers. These fobs connect to a mobile device and, if the captain falls overboard, the system shuts down the engine(s), emits an audible alarm, and sends alerts via the 1st Mate mobile app thanks to direct integration with the boat’s propulsion system.

If a crew member falls overboard, the system alerts the captain and provides the GPS coordinates of the incident.

How does 1st Mate work?

The captain (wearing the key) falls overboard:


• Engine(s) shut down when the key is submerged

• Audible alarm from the boat hub and the mobile device app

• GPS position marked on the app and on multifunction displays (if available)

• Alerts sent to the mobile app and connected passengers’ fobs

• Navigation instructions to return to the captain’s overboard location shown on connected passengers’ apps

A passenger (wearing the key) falls overboard:


• Audible alarm from the boat hub and the mobile device app

• GPS position marked on the app and on multifunction displays (if available)

• Alerts sent to the mobile app and to the captain’s and other passengers’ fobs

• Navigation instructions to reach the passenger’s overboard location shown in the app

Theft Deterrent System (TDS)


TDS locks the engine(s) to prevent unauthorized use. When you’re ready to take the helm again, you can unlock the engine(s) using the captain’s wearable fob near the boat or the 1st Mate app.

Additional TDS features are available when used with Mercury SmartCraft engines.


Emergency Message


If the captain (key holder) falls overboard and cannot return, or if the crew cannot bring the boat back to them, 1st Mate sends a message to emergency contacts.

The message is sent after a countdown or when help is requested and includes the location, heading, date, and time of the man overboard event.
